Shining Our Lights | Follow-On Project for the Gilman Scholarship

I created this website dedicated to students color and/or of low-income; my website motivates students to follow their dreams, learn about themselves, and explore the world.
There was a trend in my life where every time I wanted to apply for great opportunities serious questions would arise such as the following: Can I afford to this program? Am I capable enough to be the first one in my family to do such thing? Will I have enough support? These questions depicted my reality, but it was in my hands to overcome these adversities. I studied abroad in Thailand and traveled to Laos, Vietnam, and Indonesia. As I traveled, I carried my ancestors, family, and culture on my back. It was a new experience for all of us, but we made it through. As part of the scholarship I received, I had to create a project depicting my experience in order to inspire students to study abroad, and this site is a combination of my experiences as a Low-Income and Mexican-American student in Southeast Asia and those of my peers experiencing new environments.

Articles/ Blogs

Not much guidance was given to me with regard to my internship, but I knew I wanted to improve my writing. therefore, I created a handful of articles and blogs also depicting life in Costa Rica as a Frontier volunteer. These articles were published on the company's website. You can click on the titles to view the publications.

My initial internship was located in Kathmandu, Nepal; however, the massive earthquake that struck the country on April 25, 2015, changed my direction to Costa Rica. My university published the story of my struggle getting to Costa Rica and my experience there. You can check it out here

My Personal Blog

Writing has always been my best friend and my enemy. It helps clear my mind, see my thoughts in a tangible form, and it brings out the creative side in me; however, it is hard work for a perfectionist like myself. A piece of writing is like clay, it can be molded in infinite ways. I dive in and let my creativity create a story; the clay begins to take a different form based on the ideas influencing the direction of the story. The end product is a combination of existing techniques and my unique ideas.

This is the reason I write and create art!
